You get a better deal if you shop around for the extended warranty before buying the product

Most retailers will only sell their extended warranties to consumers who have bought the product from their store as well.  You should take into consideration the cost of the TV and the cost of the extended warranty together to find out the best overall value.

To help you decide where to buy your extended warranty from we have compiled a list of the providers and a comparison table.

Who sells extended warranties for TVs?

Retailers who sell extended warranties for TVs bought from them directly:
3rd parties who sell extended warranties on TVs bought from any retailer:

TV extended warranties comparison table

This table compares all the options if you have not bought your TV yet. The majority of TV extended warranties cover you for 3 or 5 years.

Best way to use this comparison table

We have made it easy for you to compare the overall cost by adding together the cost of the extended warranty and the cost of the product. This helps you work out the total cost over a 3 or 5 year period, which is usually the length of cover offered by the majority of the extended warranty suppliers.

It is difficult to compare extended warranties because they vary in terms of their length of cover and the way in which they are charged.  To help you compare all types of covers we have worked out what the an annual cost equivalent would be.

For this comparison chart we will use a popular  Samsung UE32F5000 32-inch Widescreen 1080p Full HD LED TV with Freeview HD.

How do we work out the total cost over 3/5year?

Most retailer require you to buy the extended warranty & product from them. For these retailers we took their price of the TV plus the cost of the cover of 3/5 years. For suppliers who only sell the extended warranty and not the TV we took the TV price from the cheapest supplier we could find. The cheapest supplier from the above retailers was Amazon which was priced at £269 for the TV alone.

Compare TV extended warranty for Samsung UE32F5000

This section compares all of the options available if you have already bought the TV. You have a lot less options if you have bought the TV already. Most extended warranties are only available on products bought from the same store e.g if you bought a TV from Argos you could not then go and buy the extended warranty from Currys. In this example you would only be able to buy the cover from Argos or a 3rd party provider, which means you might not get the best deal.

You have more options if you take the TV back to the shop for a refund

If you have bought the TV, you have limited your chances of shopping around for the best extended warranty deal. Look at the comparison table above and compare the different options to see if you could have got a better deal, taking into account the cost of the TV and the extended warranty combined. If you think you would have got a better deal see the advice about getting a refund below.

Advice on returning your TV for a refund

Did you buy in a physical retail store?

You may be able to return the product or cancel the order as you are within 30 days of purchase. This is not a legal right but it is quite common to have a 30 day return policy at a lot of retail outlets. The returns policies are usually only valid if you can return the product unused, in a resalable condition with all its packaging intact and the original receipt.

Did you buy the product online or over the phone?

In addition to the rights you have if you bought the product in a physical retail store, when you buy online or without face to face contact from a store who would normally sell in this way you have additional protection. You will definitely have 30 days to return the goods as per the Distant Sellers Act. You have the right to cancel the order up to 7 days after you have placed the order even if you have opened the product.  If the seller doesn’t give you information straight away about your right to cancel your 7 days starts from when the seller provides this information.

What to do if you cant get a refund?

If you can not get a refund then check the comparison table below which will give you all the options for if you need to purchase an extended warranty on a product you have already bought.

Check the price of your retailers extended warranty

In addition to the options in the table below you may also be able to buy the extended warranty from the place you bought it from. To check if your retailer offers an extended warranty product check table above.

Yes, I bought my TV MORE THAN 30 days ago

Retailers only have to offer you an extended warranty at the same price as when you bought the product for 30 days from purchase. Some retailers will sell you a warranty for a longer period after purchase. Visit this page for information about which suppliers offer longer than 30 days to buy the extended warranty. You may have more options than shown below if your retailer offers their extended warranty for longer than 30 days after purchase.

This table compares all the options if you have already bought your TV. The prices in this table are based upon the product being less than 1 year old. If you want to cover a product which is older than 1 year you will need to check with the extended warranty provider to see how much the age of the product affects the price or if they will even cover it.

Who is not included in the comparison chart and why?

SkyProtect

BskyB have their own TV cover protection which is in partnership with Domestic and General. It is not included in this comparison because pricing in not available on their website and you have to ring up for a custom quote. They do say that cover is available from £6 per month which is for a TV bought for less than £300 and under 8 years old.

WarrantyDirect.co.uk

Warranty Direct’s primary business is selling extended warranties for motor cars. They do offer an extended warranty for domestic appliances but they only offer a multi product cover. This cover is £12.95 per month and covers upto 3 products. This is £155.40 per year (£51.80 per item). You can add additional products for £3.25 each which is £39 per product. There cover allows you to claim upto £2000 per item and £2000 per year. For low value items they seem to be very expensive but for higher priced item for example if you had 3 items worth £2000 each it would a much more attractive offer but you should still shop around to make sure you are getting the best deal to bundle all the various extended warranties together.

Companies who sell extended warranties but not for TVs

Other alternatives to buying an extended warranty

John Lewis

John Lewis offer a free two years extended guarantee with all their electrical products. They do not charge extra for this although they do offer own extended warranty cover/service plan which covers you past the initial extended cover included in the price and also for accidental damage. They also offer a price matching service however they will not match internet only stores e.g Amazon etc.

For the Samsung TV example comparison for a five year warranty from John Lewis was the cheapest extended warranty over 3 or 5 years.

Credit cards

A couple of credit cards offer you an extended warranty on products bought with their card, up to a certain limit. Most cards do not offer this service, so it is unlikely you will have protection on your credit card, unless you were made aware of it when you signed up for the card.

Self Insure

This is only for people with plenty of savings or people with very good budgeting skills. It requires you to either put the money aside to repair the product, or have enough spare cash saved to replace the product if need be.  Extended warranties are not always the cheapest option available to you. If you have very good will power you could estimate how long you think the product you are buying will last, divide the cost of a replacement by the number of months and save that much money each month. The down side is when the product breaks you will need to try and find a trustworthy engineer to try and fix it. Even then the engineer might not be able to fix it. This could leave you with an unwanted bill and a broken product you still need to replace.

If you take into consideration all of the risks and do not value the peace of mind an extended warranty offers then you may wish to take this option.

Other things to consider when comparing TV prices

Do you need all the features?

TVs are increasingly coming with different features like HD, 3D or internet enabled smart TVs. All of these are product types have their uses to the right person. However depending what you use your TV for and what you watch on it you may be better to stick with a cheaper option. HD TV offer the ability to watch a higher quality video. A lot of DVD player will be able to supply you with these types of high quality video images to watch on your TV. However the majority of UK TV broadcasts are still not in HD (only the main four channels are free BBC 1 & 2, ITV1 & channel 4)). All though there are a handful of free to view HD channels the majority come as part of a subscription package such as Sky, Virgin Media etc. 3D TV is not very common. Although you can buy a lot of films in 3D very little TV is broadcast in 3D. The BBC have suspended it 3D programming indefinitely.

Delivery

If you are buying the TV online do you have to pay extra for delivery or is it included?
